The Near Distance

More Global Uncertainty
As we move further into 2010 it is clear that global uncertainty is continuing to rise. Just in the last week the news out of Europe and the Middle East has escalated quite a bit. The information is challenging to keep up with, but there are a few stories and trends that I think you should know about.
The U.S. isn't the only nation in the world with a currency crisis. European and many other nations around the world are in very critical times economically as evidenced by the markets last week. There is a great amount of fear about what will happen when all these economies must come to terms with their debts that they aren't able to repay. Second, there is a "secret" meeting taking place among the world's top bankers. There is trouble on the horizon and they see it. The Daily Telegraph reports this: " The arrival of the high-powered gathering coincided with a fresh meltdown on world share-markets, sparked by renewed concerns about global growth and sovereign debt. Fears countries including Greece, Portugal, Spain and Dubai could default on debt repayments combined with disappointing US jobs data to spook investors. Australia's ASX 200 slumped 2.4 per cent, to a its lowest close since November 5, echoing a sharp fall on Wall Street. Asian share markets were also pummelled, with Japan's Nikkei 225 down almost 3 per cent and Hong Kong's Hang Seng slumping 3.3 per cent. The damage was also being felt by European markets last night with London's FTSE 100 down sagging 1 per cent in early trade." Here is the link. What do these bankers really see? Third, there is still growing tension in the Middle East. There was an escalation of "warring words" especially between Syria and Israel last week. The United States showed it's concern about a conflict happening by sending more ships and missiles into the region. This is a very significant development in the Middle East. All signs say that Iran is within a year or less of acquiring nuclear weapons with missile capability. Here are some headlines to track: The level of instability and uncertainty around the world is rising. To tell the truth I am not surprised by these trends and actually expect them to continue. The source of information I trust the most is the Bible. It will surprise you how accurately and precisely the Bible describes the very days you and I live in right now. You should at least be curious enough to check it out for yourself. We live in a time like non other in history. No other time or generation of people has witnessed the events culminating all at once in our day. It at least brings the question to mind, where is real hope found? My hope is in Christ, and I encourage everyone to consider Jesus and who he is for themselves. Now is not the time to be living without hope. His hope will last far longer than this world ever will. |
